Kybella ®

Kybella is a synthetic formulation of deoxycholic acid, bile found naturally within the intestinal tract.

Kybella®

Kybella is one of the most popular non-invasive treatments when it comes to reducing stubborn fat deposits and getting a sleeker, more sculpted shape. It works by using deoxycholic acid to destroy existing fat cells which are then absorbed by the body. Common treatment areas include the stomach, sides, arms, upper back, and thighs, but it can also be used under the chin and around the jaw line.

Kybella was first approved by the FDA in 2015 and has since been used safely and successfully on those seeking a non-surgical method of removing their double chin. Kybella is a synthetic formulation of deoxycholic acid, bile found naturally within the intestinal tract.

Treatment & Results

During a Kybella treatment, the area is first prepped and numbed prior to the actual injections. Once the skin is ready, the practitioner will inject Kybella under the skin into the treatment area.

Results are not immediate, and it can take up to 12 weeks and two treatments before you start to see noticeable improvement. Peak results happen around 6 months post-procedure and are permanent. Some patients will need up to six treatments, usually spaced about a month apart, but this varies by individual shape, goals, and the size of the treatment area.

Post Care

While most patients recover quickly after Kybella, it’s a good idea to take it easy and avoid any intense exercise for the first 48 hours. You should also avoid alcohol and salty foods for the first few days. If you have bothersome swelling or discomfort, you can use ice packs and cold compresses on the treatment site.

What is Kybella

Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable used to treat submental fullness, i.e. double chin. Kybella uses a chemical called deoxycholic acid, which is a naturally occurring molecule in the body, to break down fat cells and thus, minimize fullness.

Deoxycholic acid plays a role in permanently destroying fat cells. When injected into the skin beneath the chin it dissolves the membranes that encompass fat cells, causing them to release their contents. The body then expels this waste product.

Once fat cells have been destroyed, they will not return. Those who have undergone Kybella report that the treatment not only removes subcutaneous fat cells beneath the chin but also tightens the skin. As healing occurs, neocollagenesis (the creation of new collagen) is kickstarted. Increased collagen production in the treated area results in firmer skin beneath the chin, creating a subtle lift.

How Many Treatments Will I need?

Since everyone’s anatomy is different, the number of treatments may vary from patient to patient, however, most people are happy with their results within 2-4 treatments.

What Are The Side Effects?

Kybella is considered a safe medical treatment, however, there are some risks associated with treatment. Most common side effects include swelling, bruising, pain numbness, redness and areas of hardness at the injection site. Be prepared to swell for up to 14 days before you achieve your desired results! There is a very minor risk of more serious complications as a result of treatment with Kybella. Some individuals experience facial muscle weakness, an uneven smile, difficulty swallowing, or nerve injury in the jaw. Be assured, however, that in the hands of one of our expert injectors, the risk of such complications occurring is minimal.

How Long Will Results Last?

Kybella works to destroy fat cells and once these cells are destroyed they are incapable of producing or storing fat, making further treatments unnecessary once you achieve desired results. Results start to become visible after four to six weeks and will last indefinitely. Once fat cells have been eliminated from the body, they do not regenerate. The remaining fat cells, however, can still expand with weight gain. It’s therefore vital that you maintain a relatively stable weight. Some individuals may benefit from touch-ups every year or two.

Receiving Kybella While Pregnant?

Unfortunately, we do not recommend pregnant and breastfeeding women receive kybella treatments. It is always best to wait until you are no longer pregnant or breastfeeding before you receive any type of medical cosmetic treatments.
